Congratulations to Lewis and Susan Umbrellahem and everybody involved with The Schoharie Scary Horror Film Festival, which took place at Suny Cobleskill/Bouck Hall on October 27th. This year was the debut for this festival, where about a dozen independent horror films (both features and shorts) from around the world were shown - including one I worked on: THE DROWNED from director Bruce G. Hallenbeck. My production partner James Carolus and I attended and both enjoyed ourselves. Several of the films were very cool, and I made some new friends as well.
I'd like to say thanks to Upstate New York-based independent filmmaker Christopher R. Bishop for being such a gracious and enthusiastic host at a screening of his feature film CORRUPTION at Albany's Historic Madison Theater. The movie had a one-week run there from September 21st through the 27th. I had a cameo appearance in CORRUPTION, which was originally premiered at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady, New York on February 25th (which I also attended). I wish Chris and producer Mary Shinners the best of luck with the movie.
I'd like to take a moment to reflect back on how exciting 2006 was with several film festivals, screenings and premieres coinciding around that spookiest of holidays - Halloween! It's always great watching a completed movie (whether it be mine or a friend's) with an audience, and Upstate New York's Capital Region was buzzing with activity this past fall. Thanks go out to all who were involved with these events and all who came out to support independent filmmaking. See the Out & About page for some great photos and highlights from several events: The 2006 New York State Museum Independent Film Festival, The Blood, Fangs and Claws Film Fest at the Madison Theater in Albany, New York, and The 2nd Annual New York State Museum Classic Horror Movie Festival featuring actress Betsy Palmer of FRIDAY THE 13TH fame.
This month I have a lot of thank-you's to get to. First, I'd like to thank everybody who ventured out to The New York State Museum in Albany, New York on the cold and rainy day of October 28th for The 2006 New York State Museum Independent Film Festival. The festival was the second such event hosted by the museum spotlighting independent filmmakers in Upstate New York's Capital Region. The event ran for almost 12 hours and featured several independent horror films (both features and shorts), as well as other genres. The two premieres were the Bruce G. Hallenbeck feature THE DROWNED, and my own short comedy OF THEATRE & BIKINIS. Both were well-attended, and it was a joy to speak about the movies later in the Q & A session. We also were fortunate to receive some nice press coverage from Capital News 9, which was exciting. Thanks go out to all the filmmakers who took part in the festival, and special thanks to Pat Whalen from The New York State Museum for his help as well.
Also this month I'd like to thank all those who attended The Blood, Fangs and Claws Film Fest at the Madison Theater in Albany, New York on Halloween night. It was great seeing the vampire-action feature BLOODLUST from filmmaker Michael Kazlo II, and my own vampire feature THE TEMPTRESS on the big screen. Special thanks go out to Mike for all his hard work in promoting the festival, and also to Jay Pregent from The Madison Theater for hosting us.
The third big event I took part in this Fall was The New York State Museum's 2nd Annual Classic Horror Movie Festival, held Saturday, November 11th. This year our special guest was actress Betsy Palmer of FRIDAY THE 13TH fame. Fans of the first film in the long-running horror franchise remember Ms. Palmer for her portrayal of Mrs. Voorhees (Jason's mom). The event began at 11:00 AM and featured screenings of THE SHINING, POLTERGEIST, THE LOST BOYS and of course, in honor of Ms. Palmer, FRIDAY THE 13TH. Before the showing Ms. Palmer gave an enlightening talk about her role in the film, and also did a Q & A session with the audience. She then stayed and watched the movie, and afterwards graciously signed autographs and posed for pictures with many enthusiastic fans. Independent filmmakers Bruce G. Hallenbeck, Joe Bagnardi and I introduced the films earlier in the day. I was also fortunate to dine the night before the festival with Ms. Palmer and some close friends. For me it was a truly exciting weekend. Thanks go out to Betsy Palmer for being a guest at the show. Thanks also to Pat Whalen from the New York State Museum, and to Bruce & Rosa Hallenbeck for all their hard work in putting things together and promoting the festival. And finally thank you to everyone who attended this fun, memorable event!
Thanks go out this month to independent filmmaker Jeff Burns and the organizers of the annual Albacon Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention held at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Albany, New York on October 6th, 7th and 8th. Friday evening October 6th featured an independent film festival showcasing movies from Upstate New York area filmmakers. The offerings consisted of science fiction, fantasy and horror films (both shorts and features), and two movies I worked on were screened in this lineup: The "Dead Man" segment from THE EDGE OF REALITY (directed by Joe Bagnardi), and the feature LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT (directed by Bruce G. Hallenbeck). This was my second year attending Albacon, and I had a good time watching all the interesting independent films. Thanks very much to everybody who came out to support the filmmakers.
This month I'd like to congratulate filmmakers Dan and Joe Masucci on the completion of their feature THE LAST ROUND. They hosted an advanced screening for cast and crew at The Madison Theater in Albany, New York on September 28th. I had a great time at the screening and wish them much success with this very impressive tense psychological drama. The film is also a who's who of Upstate New York Captial Region talent, and it was great to see some old friends. I had a cameo appearance in the movie.

Thanks go out to independent filmmaker Jeff Burns and the organizers of the Albacon Science Fiction convention held October 7-9 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Albany, New York. This year Albacon featured a mini film festival of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror films on Friday night from 8:00 p.m. until midnight. Several short films from Upstate New York Capital Region filmmakers were shown. Included in this lineup was the Bigfoot story The Quarry, which is the 3rd segment of the feature-length anthology horror film THE EDGE OF REALITY. Director Joe Bagnardi, his son Sean and I attended the screening. I'd like to especially thank everybody who came to watch the films and support the filmmakers.
I'd like to thank Public Affairs Director Chris Iorio and host Gary McLouth for my recent guest appearance on the television program The Subject Matters. My episode of this half-hour interview show aired Saturday, August 6th at 6:30 A.M. on WYPX TV55 (PAX) in the Upstate New York Capital Region viewing area. In the interview I discussed independent filmmaking, and I also showed clips from THE TEMPTRESS and THE EDGE OF REALITY. The episode is scheduled to be re-aired at a later date.

The event attracted large crowds and was incredibly well-covered by the local media. See the Out & About page for more on this festival.

I attended the crowded Crossgates Mall showings and had a lot of fun. Kudos Mike!

I'd like to thank the students and staff of Ichabod Crane High School in Valatia, New York for inviting filmmakers Joe Bagnardi, Bruce G. Hallenbeck and I to be judges at the first ICC student film festival. The event was held on Friday, April 30th and was hosted by the Sophomore Class. We enjoyed watching several interesting and entertaining films and discussing filmmaking in the Q & A after the awards ceremony. Best of luck to all the student filmmakers involved, and here's hoping the festival will become an annual event.
